And thats just patent numbers 438-301 to 438-306. A biography of Thomas Edison could easily fill its pages with lists. The 8,000-odd materials kept in his famous Menlo Park, NJ, lab, for instance (an attempt to carry a stock of almost every conceivable material of every size)would make a plump catalog. Edison holds more patents than any other American, even 80 years after his death. Our lights, our grid, our phones, our recordings, and our electric chairswe owe them all, perhaps, to a seemingly dense school teacher. Alexander Crawford thought Edison addled and unfit for school. Crawfords impressions may have had something to do with the fact that the boy, born in 1847, was somewhat hard of hearing (this deafness is sometimes given credit for Edisons ability to concentrate, undistracted by the noise of others). When Edisons mother learned of Crawfords opinion, she pulled the young boy out of school and schooled him herself. After a look at Edisons first experiments Crawford could conceivably be forgiven for his remarks. As a boy, Edison thought hed try hatching goose eggs himself, so he sat on them. Conjecturing that it was a birds diet that gave it the ability to fly, the young Edison mashed up worms and fed them to a friend. By the age of 12, Edison had graduated to more dangerous experiments. A job selling snacks and papers on a train allowed him time to read and tinker. By 15 he was working night shifts as a telegrapher, and a passion for the technology would pulse through his life and lead to a large percentage of his 1,093 patents as well as the nicknames of his first two children: Dot and Dash. His knowledge of the workings of telegraph machinery led to his first patent, a voting machine that no one bought or used. A more profitable invention came just three years later. A take on the ticker tape, Edisons Universal Stock Printer was bought by the Gold and stock Telegraph Company for $40,000. The money, close to half a million today, allowed him set up his own lab. He was not yet 25. By 1876 hed moved the lab, and his family, to the now famous location in Menlo Park. Soon he invented the microphone that would make the phone useful, and the cylindrical phonograph. His massive collection of materials came in handy when searching for a filament that would allow the light bulb to burn for thousands of hours. Edisons genius inventions were equaled by the apparatus he would set up to support them. Finding the baked cotton filament that allowed a light bulb to glow for 13 hours was a triumph, to be sure. But the arguably greater feat was how he showed it to the world. Wiring houses, stores, and the train station, he wowed witnesses when, on New Years eve of 1879, he threw a single switch and set the village aglow. The grid was born. Similarly, though the kinetoscope was certainly an improved version of the photo-animation that preceded it, Edison popularized it by distributing his sneezes and strip teases. Along the road, Edison also invented the electric meter, the talking doll, vacuum-packed foods, and an electric pen that could make copies of documents. While these and more of his substantial inventions improved the lives of many, another invention of Edisons would have different applications. Having built the infrastructure to power his light bulbs with DC current, he waged a legal and publicity war to crush his AC-promoting competitors (developed by former employee Nikola Tesla). To prove the dangers of AC current he took to publicly electrocuting animals, most famously the man-killer Topsy (Edisons own clip of the pachycide is conveniently available on YouTube). The success of these electrocutions led to the invention of the electric chair, which Edison eventually convinced New York to adopt in place of hanging. Edisons own death didnt occur until 1931. His final expression, arguably the last thing he made, was caught in the form of a death mask, now on display at the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. 8 Words or Phrases Never to Include in Your Resume 8 Words or Phrases Never to Include in Your Resume According to a CareerBuilder survey, 17% of hiring managers spend  an average of 30 seconds  looking at a resume before deciding if  they’re interested in a candidate. Having too  little  time to read each one in depth, obvious resume red flags, like an outdated resume format, typos, or too many unmatched resume fonts, are immediately eliminated. Even those that pass initial scrutiny can still fall prey to one of the most abiding faux pas of resume don’ts: poor diction. By this we mean those hackneyed terms  that are ripe for resume retirement. Here, we’ll talk about eight of the resume words nearly every hiring manager hates. 1. Objective “Objective” is a no-no because it is part of “Objective Statement,” an outdated phrase on any resume. These  statements  fell out of favor because they talked more about what a job seeker would get out of a position, rather than focusing on what a job seeker would bring to a position. The company-focused term is, instead, a career summary, which describes a job seeker’s most relevant skills, qualities, and accomplishments that would make them a good fit for a position. A career summary (also called executive summary) is a better alternative to an objective statement. 2. Highly-qualified If you use the word “highly-qualified” on your resume, you’re likely to seem anything but. Plus, you’ll be including one of recruiters’ turn offs. Rather than  being so bold as to list this word,  let your “highly-qualified” status become evident to readers by virtue of  your accomplishments, experience, and education. 3. Team player or  Hard worker These phrases are both clichéd and vague â€" they don’t say much about what you did in a previous position. Instead of using language that is likely on every resume, trade out phrases like these for measurable objectives. Measurable accomplishments are quantifiable achievements you performed in a position, usually expressed  in the form of numbers, percentages, and profit. 4. Utilized Utilized is just a dressed-up version of the word “use.” Don’t try to fancy up a perfectly workable verb in order to sound more accomplished. Recruiters can see right through these tactics. Skills and achievements, when properly highlighted (as through the aforementioned measurable results), need no further  embellishments. 5. Self-motivated or  Go-getter You don’t want to include too much generalizing, especially about describing how great you are. Instead of including these praiseworthy adjectives, include verbs like “improved” or “created” about your measurable accomplishments to let the reader make his or her own judgments about you. 6. Proactive “Proactive” is one of those resume buzzwords that doesn’t say much. While it might sound good, it doesn’t tell the recruiter how exactly you’re proactive. Instead of listing words that sound good, scan the job posting and your resume through Jobscan. Jobscan pulls keywords from the job posting that you should match on your resume. While  tailoring, look through those pulled keywords to find one or more that demonstrate your “proactive” attitude more specifically. Take the time to tailor your resume to each job. 7. References available upon request Another ghost  of resumes past, “References available upon request” takes up space unnecessarily â€" all employers will require references, and they will expect that job seekers will provide them. 8. Was and Became These verbs of being don’t talk about what you did in previous positions, the most important function of your resume. Instead of writing verbs like these,  include action verbs  to create  visuals in your readers’ heads. Bottom line: use words that help recruiters understand who you are  and what you can bring to the table, in the quickest and most straightforward way. Ditch superfluous terms.  Your language should be  clear in expressing what you’ve done and the various ways in which you’ve achieved them.

But you’d think soft skills, like empathy and ethical judgment, might make some jobs less vulnerable than others. Well, maybe not. Arguments can bring out the worst in us, bringing out our our preconceived prejudices and assumptions. A new kind of ethicist wants to be your referee by taking messy, personal politics out of the equation, and adding impartial algorithms into it. This new breed of ethicist: Robots.Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology developed a robot, called an “intervening ethical governor,” to help patients with Parkinson’s Disease. As people with this disease lose control over their facial expressions and motor functions, they have trouble communicating emoti ons and needs with their caregivers. Between humans, this miscommunication can result in misunderstandings or worse. But with a robot weighing in and enforcing intervention rules, researchers aim to stop arguments from ever getting that far.Robot referees in your doctors’ officesBy observing patient-caregiver interactions, this robot referee will, according to its developers, intervene if a “human’s dignity becomes threatened due to other’s inappropriate behavior.” Tracking patients’ and caregivers’ voice volume, speech, and location, the ethical robot will decide to intervene if we trigger the robot’s “too angry,” “too quiet,” or “safety-first” protocols. For example, if a patient starts getting loudly frustrated that they can’t open a pill bottle, the robot will detect the patient’s raised voice and tell them, “I understand. Let’s calm down a little bit!” If a patient gets up and leaves the room, the robot’s camera sensors will pick this up. The robot will begin to wave its hands and implore, “The session is not yet finished! Please come back!”Although the researchers are still in the proof-of-concept stage, their five-year study could have a lasting positive impact on the millions of Americans affected by Parkinson’s Disease if the robot ethicist gets adopted by clinics. In Europe, therapeutic robots are already being used to help children with autism and elderly patients with socialization issues.But we still have a ways to go before a robot referee will be weighing in on healthcare debates. To get qualitative feedback, the researchers recruited nine older adults to observe the robot ethicist in action as it mediated a patient-caregiver conversation. Results were mixed. Although the participants gave positive feedback on the robot’s safety-first purpose, they were less happy about the robot’s commanding and critical tone and the potential privacy issues. “Would both parties consent to having a robot media tor?” participants wanted to know. No one wanted the robot to have the authority to judge patients and make them feel blamed.As one observer to the robot’s interactions put it, “If the robot stood there and told me to ‘please calm down,’ I’d smack him.”
