4 Career Success Tips for Millennials and All Professionals

4 Career Success Tips for Millennials and All Professionals 4 Career Success Tips for Millennials and All Professionals 16Creating a carefully crafted career can take time, effort, some luck, and a whole lot of strategy. After all, you want to do what you love and make money, but also ensure that each job brings you to the next level in your career, too. Here are four career success tips for millennials and all professionals alike. Build your own brand. At one time, it was important to have your name associated with a well-known company. Now, companies are eager to attract job candidates who are also as equally well-known. Whether it’s your numerous Twitter followers, or the fact that you’ve been quoted in various articles, hiring managers are looking for those who have built a name for themselves, too. So get in on the act by buying the URL for your name (or some variation, if the domain name is already taken), and create a website that potential bosses can look at that serves as your portfolio of previous accomplishments, too. Dont underestimate the importance of an adult internship. Sure, you graduated from school in what seems like eons ago, but that doesn’t mean that you’re too old or too cool to intern. Especially if you’re thinking about switching gears in your career, an adult internship (paid or otherwise) can get your foot in the door into the industry that you’d like to be in. Here’s the important part, though. You have to be humble. Once you’ve accepted the internship position, you need to treat it like a job that’s paying you six figures- or more. That means you have to show up on time each and every day, work hard, and never, ever treat it like an internship. Your hard work and dedication can pay off in terms of a killer recommendation, excellent contacts, and a possible job offer. Never stop learning. It’s easy to say sayonara to your interview suit once you get offered a job. But it’s not always a good idea to get too comfy in any one position. Since job security is never really a guarantee, you should always be on the lookout for the next best job. One way to achieve this is by going on informational interviews. Not only will it keep your interviewing skills super sharp, but it will also help you stay connected and help increase your knowledge as to what hiring managers are looking for in their job applicants. Keep your connections. It’s expected that 90 percent of millennials will stay at their current jobs for less than three years. That means that, on average, a millennial may have upwards of 15 to 20 jobs over the course of his or her career. If you calculate it, that’s a lot of coworkers you’ll get to know and bosses whom you’ll work for. As you progress in your career, it’s smart to stay connected to as many of those people as you can. You never know when that former colleague from three jobs ago will be just the person to connect you to that job you really want! Having a career that you love is an investment of time, energy, and passion. You’ll ensure your own success- and have a career to be proud of- by staying ahead of the competition and improving yourself along the way.
